Walleyes will be hanging in the shallows, channels or break-lines off shore with a sand/gravel transition. The best way to target these fish are jig and a minnow or trolling small crank baits on those break-lines.
As for crappie, they will be coming off their spawning beds so your best luck will be finding those first shallow weeds near their spawning areas. Slip bobber with live bait or small hair jig is the best way to target them.
Bass will be holding tight in the weeds (10ft or less). Plastics, top-waters and spinner baits are very effective this time of year.
2026 Bow Fishing Special Event
April 25 - June 30, 2026
The permitted area has been expanded to include the entire lake, rather than being limited to four designated bays as in the previous year. Bowfishing is allowed from one-half hour after sunset until 1:00 a.m. All participants are required to carry a valid Special Event Permit while engaged in this activity.
DNR Map for Lake Minnetonka shows the Conservation District, which includes information on public access, beaches, and current water levels. For the latest updates, check the April Fishing Report from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
